“CLMT Nightwalk” – YOU HAD TO LEAVE YOUR MARK track breakdown #1

Above: “CLMT Nightwalk” project file screenshot (click to fullsize)

As I mentioned earlier this week in the announcement of the release of my second album YOU HAD TO LEAVE YOUR MARK, I’m going to be getting into the details behind the making of the album in a series of posts here on aaronpoehler.com over the coming weeks.

Of course, the preponderance of the album was played and recorded by me at Clairemont Mobile Garage (the assemblage-of-odds-and-ends I laughingly call my studio); over the course of these liner notes I’ll try to give some details as to the specifics and circumstances surrounding each track’s recording, but this was the basic setup used to create and record most of the sounds heard on YOU HAD TO LEAVE YOUR MARK:

  • Gibson ’76 Explorer 1990 electric guitar
  • Traveler EG-1 electric guitar
  • Ovation 2078TC Elite T acoustic guitar
  • Fender Catalina acoustic guitar
  • Yamaha electric bass guitar
  • Fender Squier electric bass guitar
  • Yamaha YPG-635 Portable Grand keyboard
  • Golden Age Project Pre-73 microphone preamp
  • TC-Helicon VoiceLive 2
  • Line 6 POD Guitar Multi-effects Processor
  • ZT Lunchbox amplifier
  • Line 6 Spider II amplifier
  • Hartke VXL Bass Attack Pedal and Direct Box
  • Small bass amplifier
  • Dunlop 95Q Cry Baby Wah pedal
  • Fulltone GT-500 FET Distortion + Booster and Overdrive Effects Pedal
  • Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy Analog Echo and Chorus Effects Pedal
  • Shure SM58 dynamic mic
  • MXL V67G & 990 condenser mics
  • Karma K-Micro Silver Bullet condenser mics
  • Macbook Pro 15.4” 2.53 GHz 4G RAM
  • Presonus Studio One v1 DAW
  • Tascam US-1641 audio interface
  • Apogee One audio interface
  • Tascam DR-07 portable recorder
  • KRK Rokit RP5 powered monitors

…as well as an assortment of pedals, plectrums, cables, wires and other doodads. Obviously not every piece of equipment above was used on every track –  today’s track will make that pretty obvious very quickly — and several songs have contributions from guest musicians, but this was the basic set of tools available to me at any given point during this time period.

“CLMT Nightwalk”  track breakdown (hear “CLMT Nightwalk” on Bandcamp now, free) :

This opening track is something of a wild card; cut mostly without traditional instrumentation, “CLMT Nightwalk” started out completely as an experiment, but I ended up liking the end result so much I used it to open the album!

When I began putting “CLMT Nightwalk” together, I was thinking of something Bob Weir said in the “Anthem to Beauty” Classic Albums documentary about the recording of the Grateful Dead’s ambitious-in-approach-but-baffling-in-result 2nd album Anthem Of The Sun: he/they were looking to get the sound of “heavy air” on there. Of course, the engineers at the time were baffled by this admittedly opaque request, but I interpreted it to refer to the peculiarly unique and realistic environmental sound that can only be captured by two-track stereo recording.

I attempted to emphasize this element by walking down to the corner store from my former Claremont apartment and back one evening, recording the trip using the Tascam DR-07 handheld recorder. I layered segments of that recording atop one another to exaggerate the ambience, using the rhythm of my steps filtered through the recorder sitting in my trenchcoat pocket to create a central rhythm and arranging the rest of the recording into four separate stereo tracks atop the ‘beat’ where they seemed to make sense, exaggerating the similarities between the tracks while emphasizing the differences — mostly unique events such as passing cars, key sounds, and other happy accidents.

After arriving at a mix that pleased me, I placed synthesizer loops atop the resulting mishmash and added additional environmental recordings from elsewhere in the Claremont area (including the thankfully far-off sound of what sounded like gunshots) to create something of a progression or narrative within the track. (I leave it to you to determine what this narrative might be.)

Later, when putting the tracks together for final assembly into album form I cut about forty seconds out of the middle of the track (seen in the multiple crossfades in the project file screenshot above) because it seemed to go on a bit for an intro track and I thought some of the more interesting sounds were getting lost towards the end. Finally, I tweaked the mix to sound more of a piece with the tracks to follow later in the album, mostly by adjusting the level of the “beat.” And that was basically it!

Join me next time here at aaronpoehler.com, when we’ll take a look at the creation of YOU HAD TO LEAVE YOUR MARK track #2, “Spray Vandalism”. (Spoiler: other humans were involved!)

Who Killed Bobby Fuller in 1966?

More email regarding “The Strange Case of Bobby Fuller”:

Hi, my name is Don J. Long, and in 1966 I was a radio disc jockey with my first radio gig at age 18, on a local Top 40 Pop and Rock music station in the major Los Angeles radio market, KLFM 105.5 FM, Long Beach. I was employed by the radio station full time from January to June 1966, when the station went out of business. I did the “Morning Drive” show from 6 AM to 9 AM then, with the name “D.J. the Deejay” for my radio handle.

Occasionally, I would do on-air live interviews with musical artists and celebrities on my morning show. I interviewed Bobby Fuller live on the air in April 1966, a few months before his tragic death. We mostly talked about his music, how he came from Texas, and how people compared him favorably to Buddy Holly. He was in Hollywood to do some music gigs at that time, and the program director, Harvey Sheldon, knew the guys who worked the shows up on the Sunset Strip, so they told him Bobby Fuller would be available for an on-air interview so he came down and we talked for about 20 to 30 minutes. It was all later edited into my radio show the following day. Other artists I interviewed, for example, on my radio show were Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits, Gary Lewis, Jerry Lewis’ son, of Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and Del Shannon. I wish I knew where any recordings were of my radio shows. I used to have my own copies but I was robbed in a burglary in 1975 and those tapes were stolen along with my reel-to-reel tape deck.

Bobby mentioned that he had a girlfriend from Las Vegas; she must have been the ‘Melanie’ mentioned in the reports, who was driving around Hollywood at that time in a red 1959 Cadillac convertible, allegedly given to her by a local club owner who was also from Las Vegas, who was her ex-boyfriend, and so the reports go, had ties to the Mafia and organized crime.

He also said he was really happy with his newfound success in the music business, and enjoyed working for Bob Keane (Keene) at Del-Fi and the people at Mustang Records in Hollywood. At that time, his two big hits were “Let Her Dance” and Buddy Holly’s song “Love’s Made A Fool Of You’. His big hit “I Fought The Law” was also starting to get some serious airplay at KRLA, KFWB and KHJ, and whatever they played, we played at KLFM.

Bobby impressed me as being a very positive, intense and driven but personable young man, and not the sort of person to take his own life, especially when his career was still on the rise. I don’t believe he committed suicide, he was murdered. And I would blame it totally on the girlfriend Melanie’s jealous ex-boyfriend, and his associates.

Bobby also mentioned at that time that he was really excited about buying a new red 1966 Ford Mustang 2+2 fastback sports coupe from the local Hollywood Ford dealer, which would have been Don Hartunian Hollywood Ford at that time. I don’t know if he purchased the car or not, but he talked about it on my show interview with me.

For what it’s worth, this is my input into this story. I also gave this same story, my testimony, to the TV series “Unsolved Mysteries” in 1996 when they ran a segment of their program about this case.

Just thought I would drop you a line about this, since I read online you were interested in this case.

Best Regards,

Don J. Long

Thanks, Don, interesting stuff. It’s a real shame your interview tapes disappeared, I’m sure those would be fascinating to hear today — I’m a big Del Shannon fan too.

Secrets of the Pros – Modern Recording and Mixing reviewed

As someone who went to school to study audio engineering (Indiana University, under Dr. David Pickett & Wayne Jackson — didn’t finish the program) I understand that making a recording & mixing tutorial is an inherently difficult task: although we definitely received some useful instruction, 99% of the useful information I’ve gained about audio recording in my lifetime came from hands-on experience. In Secrets of the Pros – Modern Recording and Mixing, instructor Ken Walden tells us that he gained a lot of useful knowledge from his own frequently-mentioned experiences, but unfortunately he fails to convey much of it to his audience over the course of these two DVDs.

An instructive example: in his introduction to the section on “Recording Bass Guitar” Walden discusses how he’s played the bass for years and been involved in many sessions behind the mixing desk with world-class bass players. Great! So he must have many useful tips and tricks to pass on, right? That’s why we bought this  thing called Secrets Of The Pros, after all!

Unfortunately, all Walden has to offer us is this: 1. usually bass guitar is recorded direct using a DI (direct input) and 2. a good instrument sounds better than a shitty one. Hey, thanks Ken! Those are not Secrets Of The Pros in any way. That’s very basic advice one would give someone who had never recorded anything in their life and was thinking about maybe someday buying a bass.  Oh, and may I point out the entire section is under four minutes long?

Mostly the rest of the $40 set goes the same way: a few very basic tips that anyone who knows the difference between a condenser mic and a dynamic mic will already know, accompanied by overly-specific information about particular systems (Pro Tools, less ubiquitous every day) that may or may not apply to your setup even if it’s not already outdated. Walden may well have been involved with many professional sessions as he continually asserts, but at the conclusion of each section I keep wondering: in what capacity? He doesn’t really impress as someone who knows a lot about any of the subjects covered in this course; I’m guessing he was maybe a second engineer at best, because he keeps making reference to techniques as “this is the way this is usually done” or “I saw this setup in nearly all the sessions I was in” and not “this is why I use this mic over this one” or “when I mixed this album I did this”. Looking at his credentials I see he did a couple of years at a San Francisco studio and then basically spent seven+ years as a Pro Tools trainer, which explains his oddly detailed overemphasis of Pro Tools in certain sections and his complete lack of knowledge in others — I was floored that his advice for recording drums basically boiled down to “Record a professional drummer in a professional studio with a massive tracking room and a hugely expensive board, if you can’t afford that, um, use fewer mics I guess? Zeppelin used the three mic configuration a lot and that’s cool, so do that.”

Walden simply doesn’t seem to have much to offer project studio engineers, whom I would guess comprise 99%+ of the audience for an instructional set like this — especially when you consider that anyone who didn’t already know the stuff Walden passes along would have zero chance of ever being hired in any professional capacity. Frankly, there is nothing about Walden’s set I can recommend either to novices or to more experienced engineers that Alan Parsons’ Art & Science of Sound Recording (hardly an unflawed program in itself, mind you) doesn’t do far, far better — with one exception.

The one is a doozy, though: the last instruction section (called “The Big Secret” in a marketing hook move so transparently ridiculous it’s honestly offensive) is a 50+ minute look at home studio acoustics primarily delivered by Manny LaCarrubba. Walden does throw his two cents in here and there, but this section is really LaCarrubba’s show, in which he breaks down a ridiculously complex topic (just try and read some acoustics textbooks sometime, I dare you) in a way that’s both useful and practical for engineers on any level of ability. Using what LaCarrubba shows here, I’d be surprised if almost anyone couldn’t make improvements in their listening/recording environment with noticeably positive effects on the end result — something that can’t be said about any of the other advice on this DVD set, unfortunately.

It’s too bad the disparity between the quality of “The Big Secret” (ugh, that makes me groan every time) acoustics section and the level of the rest of Walden’s advice is so large, because I can’t in good conscience recommend a $40 product where only about a quarter of the content delivers on its promise. Fortunately, you don’t have to waste your time and money on the useless sections of this product anymore, as the sections are available as individual downloads: eight bucks for the useful part and forget the rest.  It looks like someone uploaded the first nine minutes of this section to youtube; that should be enough to give you an idea of what to expect and whether “The Big Secret” is for you. As far as the rest of the program, don’t waste your time: no matter your level of skill and experience, there are far better, more comprehensive, and much more contemporary (very very important, as quickly as recording technology changes) programs available for you.

And hey, Manny! Make your own acoustics program! I’d buy it and probably recommend it too.

The Grateful Dead sold $3.2 million worth of CDs in four days and they’re about to do it again

Granted, events in the world of the Grateful Dead have always seemed to take place in their own isolated little universe, rarely interacting with the rest of the music world in any significant way, but given the general hue and cry over the pending collapse of the music industry and the demise of physical media I’m slightly surprised no one seems to have noticed this. Or maybe people just can’t do math for shit.

Basically: the Grateful Dead released a massive limited-edition box set containing 72 or 73 CDs and over 70 hours of music.  While usually such huge projects collect the lifetime’s output of a continually popular artist like Elvis or Sinatra, when you’re talking about the Dead 70+ CDs boils down to 22 shows from an under-two month period of the band’s existence. Sure, the Europe ’72 run is among the band’s strongest period musically, and $450 for 70+ CDs is actually a pretty good deal, but one might not be blamed for arguing that the Dead are far from the height of their popularity and the economy right now is, well, what it is. Plus, you know, MUSIC PIRACY IS KILLING THE RECORD INDUSTRY and all that so who’s going to spend half a grand on some old tapes when they can probably just steal it online?  (In fact, when the box was first offered the band’s organization hedged their bets, stating the set would only be produced if they received a certain number of  orders.)

Now, I don’t know exactly what costs went into these sets, but let’s be real: the most expensive part is the packaging, which they’re trimming from the reissue, and whatever they had to lay out for remixing/remastering the audio has already been recouped many times over. The Dead has been doing this archival release thing for awhile and had their own team already in place.  Marketing costs consisted of putting out two or three press releases saying “Hey, we’re gonna do this thing” and that’s about it.  They were upfront about the fact that they were not going to even bother doing these sets if they were going to lose money, and who could blame them? Dead fans have been trading tapes/CDs/digital files of these shows for 35 years — did they want or need these discs? And even if they did, wouldn’t they just steal the music?

As it turned out, they needn’t have worried: they sold all 7200 box set in less than four days.  To break that down: 7200 sets times $450 per set = $3.24 million American. And because the sets went so quickly, they’re making another 7200 “music only” sets without the fancy packaging and bonus insert materials of the first pressing, as well as releasing all 22 shows from the set individual albums, so we’re probably looking at $7 million minimum all told — at least $4 million of which is pure profit. That’s insane.

I can’t help but wonder what other groups could even dream of approaching something like this, either today or forty years after the fact. Granted, a similar undertaking from most bands would be tedious as fuck since they churn out the same tired set in the same order every night like robots with malfunctioning A.I., but that’s more a failing of their own concessions to entertainment over artistry.  Pearl Jam and Radiohead maybe? Hm. Maybe the lesson to be derived here is that more bands should think about changing up their setlists and putting more effort into making each concert a unique musical event in order to bolster their retirement plans.

Personally, I could definitely go for complete Miles Davis tours from the Columbia archives now that they’ve started issuing ‘Bootleg Series’ releases.  Fortunately the Miles sets seem to do quite well, always winning packaging and remastering awards and whatnot — and I know they’ve gotten plenty of play around here! — so perhaps my dream isn’t so far off after all.

Speaking out against false nostalgia in 1994, Eddie Vedder sang “Kids of today should defend themselves against the 70s”…

Sun Jun 12 05:19:41 +0000 2011

It’s hard to deny that a good number of DC’s 52 relaunch series feel like the ‘DC Explosion’ titles of the late 70s #quicklycanceled

Sat Jun 11 17:34:28 +0000 2011

Conversely, I’d have bet good money there was no way DC could possibly make a Stormwatch series interesting but with @Paul_Cornell, it is.

Thu Jun 09 18:29:36 +0000 2011

Marvel had better step up its PR game. Yet another obnoxiously obvious X-Men relaunch coupled with terrible Greg Land art ain’t cutting it.

Thu Jun 09 18:22:56 +0000 2011

On Invincible #80: Well if that wasn’t the most Kirkmany Kirkman comic that ever Kirkmaned I don’t know what is. Coast City/The Pitt anyone?

Thu Jun 09 15:35:20 +0000 2011

The worst part about seeing Robert Plant is all the people who really just want a sad echo of something they saw 35 years ago.

Whatever happened to Argyle from Die Hard

Mon Jun 06 03:23:31 +0000 2011

Bends’ Moon Knight series really not doing it for me. And seriously, Echo again? Reads like the cliche of BMB talktalktalk empty writing.

Sat Jun 04 19:31:33 +0000 2011

Avengers Academy 14/14.1: continues to surprise me as one of the most consistent titles Marvel currently releases. Gage gets it–good stuff.

Sat Jun 04 19:16:29 +0000 2011

Amazing Spider-man now reads like Slott trying to get out all his stuff other guys vetoed during the multiwriter era. Get on with it, man.

Sat Jun 04 18:11:52 +0000 2011

Stuart Immonen is one of the best artists working today but man is Fear Itself ever terrible. Just bad writing all around, senseless crap.

Starting to think that not only am I completely done playing any cover songs, I may also be done listening to cover material. It’s boring.

Mon May 09 21:16:38 +0000 2011

Marvel’s Fear Itself is sort of incomprehensible and lacking any kind of actual story but man Stuart Immonen sure can draw.

The short story in this issue kind of sucked too.

Sat Apr 30 15:03:07 +0000 2011

While Donald Glover’s concert was mediocre, I’m surprised more media celebs don’t do similar tours to milk it while they have the chance

Wed Apr 27 22:25:38 +0000 2011

The properties of art aren’t additive–cf. Donald Glover @ Belly Up, a 2 star comedy set + a 2 star rap set = a 2 star show.

Wed Apr 27 06:28:56 +0000 2011

I feel like I just paid to finance Donald Glover’s fantasy of being an actual musician.

Wed Apr 27 06:21:35 +0000 2011

Painting a peace sign and flowers on the spare tire cover of one’s vintage VW Microbus seems more than a bit on the nose

Tue Apr 26 20:19:45 +0000 2011

No sympathy for anyone complaining the internet is boring. If you can’t guide your own entertainment don’t expect the world to cater to you.

Mon Apr 25 22:41:40 +0000 2011

Haha, “We’re DFA 1979, stick around for Duran Duran”. Sorry DD, you have been replaced with Kanye

Thu Apr 21 05:12:58 +0000 2011

PJ Harvey’s set is mesmerizing.

Thu Apr 21 04:43:52 +0000 2011

Well the National’s Coachella set was better than the Strokes’ but then they had the advantage of being a better band playing better music

Thu Apr 21 04:09:42 +0000 2011

For some it was last weekend but tonight is my Coachella, here in my living room. The Strokes on now, the National up next, followed by…?

Thu Apr 21 01:54:38 +0000 2011

Two months ago I’d never heard of Odd Future and now I’m completely sick of hearing about them. Such are the risks of instant overexposure

There is and always has been something fundamentally uninteresting about the Smithereens, despite a few catchy tunes. Too formalist/retro?

Tue Apr 19 19:40:36 +0000 2011

I’m almost sorry to have to give up my weekend of saying “No, we can’t watch Game Of Thrones, the New York Times says women won’t like it”

Mon Apr 18 04:40:11 +0000 2011

Kitchen Nightmares US is such a fluffy reality-show POS compared to the original UK show, especially now

Also bands, really: don’t do the ‘everybody wearing sunglasses in the picture’ thing. You don’t look like the Blues Brothers, you look dumb.

Wed Apr 13 15:55:04 +0000 2011

Seriously people stop naming your band The Black _____s. NOBODY CAN TELL YOU APART

Wed Apr 13 15:40:35 +0000 2011

Daytrotter sessions sure have the potential to be cool if they didn’t sound like 128kbps crap. The downloader is ridiculously awful as well.

Tue Apr 12 00:57:16 +0000 2011

Peter Tomasi, everyone thinks it’s incredibly pretentious that your credit is “story & words” instead of just “writer” or “scripter,” FYI

I’m sure tired of listening to this album but as soon as I decide not to double-check everything then bang, there’ll be a massive glitch

Mon Mar 21 21:38:32 +0000 2011

Sat Mar 12 21:09:45 +0000 2011

Funniest thing I’ve seen so far today: comment section full of people lamenting the death of the CD by complaining ‘digital music sucks’

Mon Sep 12 16:30:22 +0000 2011

Mostly though these New 52 #1 review columns all read the same: staid & lacking Sterling’s insight. 6 months in, then they’ll have a point.

Mon Sep 12 16:25:33 +0000 2011

Not writing on DC’s New52 #1s because there’s more than enough of that already but Giffen’s OMAC is pure Kirby goodness http://t.co/R8AZqpb

Catch-22: if you take Esquire’s How To Be A Man feature remotely seriously you are precluded from being one

Sat Sep 10 19:18:55 +0000 2011

Hey, Spider-Island: Avengers was actually quite good, don’t miss it in the sea of samey-looking tie-ins with generic names on the stands

Fri Sep 09 19:01:31 +0000 2011

Whenever something actually happens on which one might want current news updates I’m struck by the uselessness of all local SD news websites

Fri Sep 09 18:23:05 +0000 2011

At this point New Order w/o Peter Hook isn’t Queen w/o Freddie Mercury, it’s Dream Theater w/o Mike Portnoy–both badly need to STFU ASAP

Fri Sep 09 16:24:08 +0000 2011

How is it possible every month’s Zenescope covers are more cringe-inducingly mortifying than the last?

Fri Sep 09 14:17:18 +0000 2011

“San Diego: I SURVIVED being slightly uncomfortable for just under 12 hours” t-shirts would probably have a limited sale window

Wed Sep 07 21:28:08 +0000 2011

If you bought an ipad 2 case that doesn’t make use of the smart cover auto wake/sleep feature you oughtta take that shit back tout suite

Wed Sep 07 19:42:02 +0000 2011

Everything about Marvel’s Season 1 OGN covers from art to trade dress is awful unless “remainder-bin knockoffs” is what they were going for

Tue Sep 06 21:39:40 +0000 2011

I enjoy the work of PJ Harvey including her newest album but as an American I must disavow any knowledge of what the Mercury Prize is

Tue Sep 06 21:36:31 +0000 2011

Does your band have a ‘clever’ name? Man is that going to get old fast.

Tue Sep 06 16:34:33 +0000 2011

I never thought I’d be okay with a Hookless New Order but then I never thought Hook would be so blatantly exploitative of Joy Division music

Sun Sep 04 17:53:11 +0000 2011

I kinda think all instagram/hipstamatic processed photos look shitty now and will look moreso as time continues to pass

Fri Sep 02 02:19:21 +0000 2011

Guess I know what I’ll be listening to/watching over the wkend when I’m not doing acoustic treatment on the garage http://t.co/uvVjFTt

Thu Sep 01 23:18:28 +0000 2011

Who are the dumbfucks buying these licensed versions of Monopoly? It’s the same game with different tokens and street names. It’s also sad.

Thu Sep 01 05:27:23 +0000 2011

Oscar Jiminez could have been an A-list comic book artist if he’d ever delivered work in a remotely timely fashion. Great stuff but so late.

Tue Aug 30 16:32:09 +0000 2011

Was down for the concept of Ghost but not finding the music on Opus Eponymous as good as I’d hoped

Tue Aug 30 01:12:36 +0000 2011

Man I loves me some Thin Lizzy but the guitar solo on “The Rocker” is total ass

Mon Aug 29 18:44:35 +0000 2011

If I enjoy someone’s creative output it doesn’t mean I want to be harangued to help promote it as if that’s somehow my responsibility.

Mon Aug 29 16:24:52 +0000 2011

It must be tough to work up the enthusiasm to pretend anyone’s cared in the slightest about the Video Music Awards in decades

Sun Aug 28 19:29:40 +0000 2011

There can never be enough Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire comics (but they don’t all have to be Justice League related–maybe creator-owned next?)

Sat Aug 27 00:14:35 +0000 2011

Hey awesome, reverse sexism. Thanks Bounce/Procter & Gamble, and fuck you too http://t.co/GavTMeP

Tue Aug 23 16:58:09 +0000 2011

I wonder how often that Static-X guy catches his reflection in the dressing room mirror & sighs deeply & mournfully before going onstage

Mon Aug 22 19:17:10 +0000 2011

All of these “Who’s Who at DC Comics-The New 52″ creator profiles are staggeringly dull. Done in the least imaginative way possible.

Mon Aug 22 17:30:59 +0000 2011

I guess it’s safe to take my Borders Rewards and Blockbuster Video cards out of my wallet now

Fri Aug 19 21:09:10 +0000 2011

Admittedly the blacklight room already breaks the Corvette Diner 50s theme but the Insane Clown Posse Bizarre Bazaar poster is going too far

Thu Aug 18 15:29:38 +0000 2011

Watched Blur – T in the Park last night. Do they get better or is singing shittily & out of key just Damon Albarn’s ‘thing’?

Wed Aug 17 23:01:02 +0000 2011

Keep thinking agency on Mad Men is named Sterling Archer Associates, then get distracted thinking about how awesome that premise would be

Wed Aug 17 20:55:08 +0000 2011

A writer writing to other writers about writing does not seem like worthwhile networking unless one’s aim is to be a writing teacher.

Wed Aug 17 15:40:14 +0000 2011

Though I too mourn the loss of canvas for visual art and text in albums, digital booklets are a waste of time for creator & listener alike

Tue Aug 16 19:35:38 +0000 2011

I got an offer claiming $15 for Harmony Balance-Bands is “a $40 value”, rather than the more accurate “$15 for a worthless scam product”

God T.H.U.N.D.E.R Agents is awesome. I hope it doesn’t get completely buried and forgotten in the New 52 push.

Thu Aug 11 02:15:02 +0000 2011

Tip of the hat to Scott Snyder for a stellar scripting job on his Detective Comics run–looking forward to Batman run starting next month.

Wed Aug 10 20:58:09 +0000 2011

I like few bands enough to bother listening to a remix collection and I’m afraid Radiohead’s music hasn’t been rewarding enough for years

Wed Aug 10 17:12:40 +0000 2011

Watched the Horrors’ Glastonbury set last night: not bad, not great. Lyrics too simplistic and repetitive, songs a bit flimsy. 3 stars

Mon Aug 08 22:06:46 +0000 2011

Lord knows I loves me some metal but the whole “No really look how EEEEVIL I am” act some people in the genre pull is painfully corny

Sat Aug 06 00:46:35 +0000 2011

I’m fine with Lorne not changing out any SNL cast but I better not see any Deep House Dish, Target Lady, or What’s Up With That next season

Fri Aug 05 19:55:20 +0000 2011

Musical considerations aside, bands that dress up to look “old-timey” give me shudders of revulsion

Fri Aug 05 17:34:10 +0000 2011

…kids of today should defend themselves against false nostalgia for Ten and Nevermind.

Tue Aug 02 21:44:37 +0000 2011

Mon Jul 18 21:09:18 +0000 2011

Checked out some Widespread Panic music this weekend, found it all fairly tepid & unambitious. Decided I don’t really like Widespread Panic.

Sun Jul 17 17:45:34 +0000 2011

Every article on Battles for the past several months, summarized: “There sure are three guys in the band now instead of four”

Sat Jun 11 17:34:28 +0000 2011

It’s hard to deny that a good number of DC’s 52 relaunch series feel like the ‘DC Explosion’ titles of the late 70s #quicklycanceled

Thu Jun 09 18:29:36 +0000 2011

Conversely, I’d have bet good money there was no way DC could possibly make a Stormwatch series interesting but with @Paul_Cornell, it is.

Thu Jun 09 18:22:56 +0000 2011

Marvel had better step up its PR game. Yet another obnoxiously obvious X-Men relaunch coupled with terrible Greg Land art ain’t cutting it.

Thu Jun 09 15:35:20 +0000 2011

On Invincible #80: Well if that wasn’t the most Kirkmany Kirkman comic that ever Kirkmaned I don’t know what is. Coast City/The Pitt anyone?

Thu Jun 09 06:10:02 +0000 2011

The worst part about seeing Robert Plant is all the people who really just want a sad echo of something they saw 35 years ago.

Thu Jun 09 03:42:53 +0000 2011

I don’t understand why it takes longer to get a drink at Copley Symphony Hall than anywhere else in the world

Creepy Creeps’ show doesn’t really work in a theater setting but they seem like they’d tear up the right club.

Wed Jun 08 17:24:49 +0000 2011

Really glad Paul Levitz’ LSH book isn’t going away but honestly surprised to find DC still thinks the market can support 2 Legion books.

Whatever happened to Argyle from Die Hard

Sat Jun 04 19:31:33 +0000 2011

Bends’ Moon Knight series really not doing it for me. And seriously, Echo again? Reads like the cliche of BMB talktalktalk empty writing.

Sat Jun 04 19:16:29 +0000 2011

Avengers Academy 14/14.1: continues to surprise me as one of the most consistent titles Marvel currently releases. Gage gets it–good stuff.

Sat Jun 04 18:11:52 +0000 2011

Amazing Spider-man now reads like Slott trying to get out all his stuff other guys vetoed during the multiwriter era. Get on with it, man.

Sat Jun 04 17:57:05 +0000 2011

Stuart Immonen is one of the best artists working today but man is Fear Itself ever terrible. Just bad writing all around, senseless crap.

Starting to think that not only am I completely done playing any cover songs, I may also be done listening to cover material. It’s boring.

Sat May 07 20:36:16 +0000 2011

Marvel’s Fear Itself is sort of incomprehensible and lacking any kind of actual story but man Stuart Immonen sure can draw.

Thu May 05 02:43:25 +0000 2011

The short story in this issue kind of sucked too.

Wed Apr 27 22:25:38 +0000 2011

While Donald Glover’s concert was mediocre, I’m surprised more media celebs don’t do similar tours to milk it while they have the chance

Wed Apr 27 06:28:56 +0000 2011

The properties of art aren’t additive–cf. Donald Glover @ Belly Up, a 2 star comedy set + a 2 star rap set = a 2 star show.

Wed Apr 27 06:21:35 +0000 2011

I feel like I just paid to finance Donald Glover’s fantasy of being an actual musician.

Tue Apr 26 20:19:45 +0000 2011

PJ Harvey’s set is mesmerizing.

Thu Apr 21 04:09:42 +0000 2011

Well the National’s Coachella set was better than the Strokes’ but then they had the advantage of being a better band playing better music

Thu Apr 21 01:54:38 +0000 2011

For some it was last weekend but tonight is my Coachella, here in my living room. The Strokes on now, the National up next, followed by…?

There is and always has been something fundamentally uninteresting about the Smithereens, despite a few catchy tunes. Too formalist/retro?

Mon Apr 18 04:40:11 +0000 2011

I’m almost sorry to have to give up my weekend of saying “No, we can’t watch Game Of Thrones, the New York Times says women won’t like it”

Sun Apr 17 19:49:59 +0000 2011

Kitchen Nightmares US is such a fluffy reality-show POS compared to the original UK show, especially now

Sun Apr 17 17:06:59 +0000 2011

A little Emitt Rhodes goes a long way. Too much McCartney, not enough Beefheart

Sun Apr 17 01:55:19 +0000 2011

Anthony Michael Hall definitely should have been Jimmy Olsen at some point

The Daytrotter downloader reeks of “Well, we spent all this money to develop this useless POS interface so we’re damn well gonna use it”

Also bands, really: don’t do the ‘everybody wearing sunglasses in the picture’ thing. You don’t look like the Blues Brothers, you look dumb.

Wed Apr 13 15:40:35 +0000 2011

Seriously people stop naming your band The Black _____s. NOBODY CAN TELL YOU APART

Tue Apr 12 00:57:16 +0000 2011

Daytrotter sessions sure have the potential to be cool if they didn’t sound like 128kbps crap. The downloader is ridiculously awful as well.

Sat Apr 09 16:53:59 +0000 2011

Peter Tomasi, everyone thinks it’s incredibly pretentious that your credit is “story & words” instead of just “writer” or “scripter,” FYI

Sat Apr 09 16:30:47 +0000 2011

Man Brian Bendis sure thinks the Hood is an interesting character. Too bad he doesn’t convey that in his writing for shit

Wed Apr 06 18:44:13 +0000 2011

Definitely been laughing a lot as I catch up on Community but with s01e23 “Modern Warfare” the show takes a place as one of my favorites.

Thu Mar 31 06:34:45 +0000 2011

Just finished Lowside of the Road: A Life of Tom Waits. Amazon reviews pretty much tell the story here.

Hey @chrisbrown do us all a favor and go away forever; failing that at least stop hitting things to express your limited range of emotion

Mon Mar 21 21:38:32 +0000 2011

I’m sure tired of listening to this album but as soon as I decide not to double-check everything then bang, there’ll be a massive glitch

Thu Mar 17 21:15:06 +0000 2011

Finally unsubscribing from Borders Rewards email after years–too little signal-to-noise, too little reward, and of late, too many untruths.

These Jessie J musical performances are almost fascinatingly terrible.

Food was decent but if 8PM Sat is dead at Fat City Steakhouse when do they make money?

Sat Mar 12 21:09:45 +0000 2011

The sound on the new REM album kind of sucks. Hypercompressed, can’t get into it.

Sat Mar 12 18:24:00 +0000 2011

It’s not a “supergroup” if you have to explain who all the band members are

Sat Mar 12 06:16:44 +0000 2011

Scrobbling no more: shut down and deleted the last.fm account I had for five years because really who cares

This is why: Matt Fraction on the heartbreak of indie art

To be honest I haven’t really been enjoying a lot of Matt Fraction’s recent Marvel writing and I never did get around to reading Casanova (the return of which is this interview’s putative subject) but I thought he encapsulated something here I’ve never really seen expressed before this well and this concisely.

No one ever talks about how the heartbreak of independent comics is that all your friends let you down. We never say that out loud. We never come out and say, “You know what’s bullsh*t? How my best friend didn’t produce work on time.” That’s the thing. It’s a hurtful, painful thing. No one ever talks about that. What happens when you ruin your relationships with all your friends because life gets in the way and you fumble, because doing this much work for free is a motherf*cker. No one comes out and says, “Doing this much work for free is a motherf*cker.”

If you’ve ever wondered why your town — every town — doesn’t have dozens of cool bands putting out new music all the time; a wide variety of blogs, zines, books, and other publications microfocused on the concerns and issues of the community; and a supportive, collaborative environment in which people of all kinds produce and share the fruits of their creativity freely and without fear: this is why.
